Fall of a Super Star: George Harrison
Flags are at half-mast in Liverpool as the city mourns one of its most famous sons, George Harrison. He rose to international fame at the age of 17 as a member of the Beatles and went on to a career as a leading British film producer. Musically, he defined a generation, with borrowings from Eastern music and religion. Millions of fans worldwide have been united in their grief and tributes have been paid by musicians and world leaders as diverse as Michael Jackson and Queen Elizabeth. Nickalus Witchell reports.
George Harrison was an unlikely rock star, an unassuming man, cynical about celebrity, concentrating on what mattered, the music. He’d been a heavy smoker for many years. Three years ago, he disclosed that he had cancer. He’d gone to Los Angeles for a final attempt at treatment. He died at a friend’s house yesterday afternoon. In a statement, his family said, he left this world as he lived in it, conscious of God, fearless of death, and at peace.
Of the four young Liverpudlians whose music had such an influence on popular culture in the 1960’s, only two now survive. Paul McCartney first met George Harrison at school.
Paul McCartney: He’s a lovely man, I love him dearly. I grew up with him and I like to remember all the great times we had together in Liverpool and with the Beatles and ever since, really. Say, I’m very sad for him and his family and for all of us. A fantastic guy, lovely man, great sense of humor, I was lucky enough to see him a couple of weeks ago and he was still laughing and joking. A very brave man and I’m just privileged to have known him and I love him like he’s my brother.
In a statement, Ringo Starr, the other surviving Beatle, said: “We will miss George, for his sense of love, his sense of music, and his sense of laughter.”
Tony Blair, in Dublin with the Irish Prime Minister, was ten when the Beatles had their first number one.
Tony Blair: I never had the privilege of meeting George Harrison, but the generation of Bertie and myself, I mean we grew up with the Beatles. You know, their music, and the band, the personalities of the band were the background for our lives. I think people will be very sad at his death and I think it’s worth pointing out that he wasn’t just a great musician and artist, but he did an immense amount for charity as well, so he will be very, very sadly missed by people right around the world.
In Liverpool, the city that was theirs and which they made famous, some people laid flowers for George Harrison at a statue of the Beatles. Others signed a book of condolence. And on Penny Lane, about which they once sang a song, memories were stirred.
Fan 1: We used to watch him when the Cabin and the rooftop sessions, and followed their music. It’s a very sad day for the people of Liverpool today.
Fan 2: I was really, really sad about it because it looked like it was going to happen, you know. But I was really sad.
In New York, the city where 21 years ago, John Lennon was shot dead by a deranged fan, at Strawberry Fields, tributes were being paid to another member of that group, a man whose music inspired many.
Bob Geldof: I think almost uniquely possibly in music and certainly in guitar, are a guitarist’s paces, his, all his solos or his little licks can be hummed by practically everyone in the world. I don’t think there is another guitar player can claim that.
Some months ago, just before his final illness, George Harrison undertook his last project. It was the reworking of a 1970 album entitled, “All Things Must Pass.”

NASA Completes First Asteroid Landing
An unmanned American spacecraft has made the first ever landing on an asteroid. The NEAR-Shoemaker probe touched down after studying the asteroid Eros for the past year. There was 5)jubilation at the NASA space agency at their success in landing on such a relatively small target so far away.
A computer image of the spacecraft as it made its carefully controlled four-hour descent onto the asteroid. After a year orbiting it and with a less than one percent chance of success, the spacecraft landed right on schedule. Scientists had predicted it might be destroyed by the impact or perhaps even bounce back into space. But against all the odds the spacecraft actually survived. The head of mission control could barely contain his delight at the outcome.
Robert Farquhar, mission director: I’m happy to report that the NEAR spacecraft has touched down on the surface of Eros. This is the first time that any spacecraft has landed on a small body.
Scientists studying the images from the spacecraft’s camera were astonished at the sheer number and variety of boulders strewn across the asteroid’s surface. The successful mission provides a much needed boost for the American space agency NASA, as it tries to recover some pride after a series of failed missions to the planet Mars in the last few years.

IOC New Leader Elected
Jacques Rogge, an orthopedic surgeon from Belgium, now holds the most powerful job in world sport. He’s been elected as the new president of the International Olympic Committee and takes over after the 21-year presidential term of the outgoing Juan Antonio Samaranch.
Received in Moscow like a head of state, the last act of the outgoing president was to announce his successor. Mr. Samaranch didn’t vote. He left that to the hundred-odd members of the Olympic committee, a disparate collection of sports administrators, many with conflicting agendas. The result, when it came, was no surprise.
Samaranch: The new President of the International Olympic Committee is Dr. Jacques Rogge.
With all the pageantry of a Miss World, save the tears and tiara, a Belgian surgeon, and Samaranch disciple, now assumes the most powerful position in world sport. So the Olympic committee has opted for compromised Belgian style. Jacques Rogge was believed to be President Samaranch’s preferred candidate. Another European, he was also considered to be the least controversial choice. But controversy stalks this movement. Jacques Rogge may be Mr. Clean, but even one of the failed candidates was alleged to have offered a $50,000 salary for every committee member. Un Yong Kim from South Korea denied it. He was too unwell to attend today’s ceremony and hear the new president’s pledges.
Rogge: I would definitely want to innovate in many fields because the IOC has to follow the changes of society and I would particularly want to defend the credibility of sport against threats of doping, corruption, violence.
The new man’s first task was to award the old man the highest honor in the Olympic movement. Samaranch bows out with a gold for his mountain effort. Jacques Rogge is left to negotiate the hurdles of drug cheats, high finance, and corruption.

Kipling Letters Up for Sale
Here in Britain a collection of letters is going on sale which may shed new light on the private life of the author Rudyard Kipling. He’s best known for writing the Jungle Book, Kim and The Just So Stories. The private letters are from Kipling to his children’s governess.
Nearly 70 years after his death, the Bateman’s Estate in Sussex remains the shrine of Rudyard Kipling. One of the most influential writers of his day, Kipling was even asked to write speeches for the king. The public spokesman for the British Empire was also the head of a close knit family. It’s his letters to Mary Blaikie, the family governess, that are up for sale. The letters reveal how close Kipling was to his only son John. His life was torn apart by John’s death in the First World War.
Pippa Little, Mary Blaikie’s great niece: This is a rather sad letter because it was written in 1915 just before he died and he was desperate to be in the First World War and in fact when he applied to the army he didn’t get in. And Rudyard Kipling pulled strings and got him in and then very sadly, soon after this letter he was killed in action. And of course his father was absolutely devastated, as was my aunt.
Even after she left the family, Mary Blaikie remained a close friend of Kipling. The two corresponded for more than 20 years. Many of the letters were written here at his desk at Bateman’s. The huge interest they generated almost a century later is a sign of Kipling’s enduring appeal. Scholars are hoping they will reveal more about this intensely private man.
Michael Smith, The Kipling Society: Kipling wrote an autobiography in the last year of his life. It was called Something Of Myself. A lot of people think perhaps it ought to have been entitled Very Little of Myself or Hardly Anything of Myself because it doesn’t come over with some of the things we would most like to have known about his character. But these letters which have now come to light do put him in an extremely human way.
The Kipling Society would like to see the letters remain in Britain but bids are expected from around the world at today’s auction. Collectors will always be interested in anything that sheds light on this public figure whose private life remains such an enigma.

Tamil attack reveals Buddhist murals
Conservation experts say a Tamil Tiger bomb attack on Sri Lanka’s sacred Buddhist temple accidentally uncovered priceless murals. Scholars have been slowly piecing together fragments of the murals revealed by the explosion two years ago in the Temple of the Tooth in the hill town of Kandy. As Francis Harrison reports from Kandy, they now believe they are of extraordinary significance.
Kandy, home to the Buddhist tooth, for many Sri Lankans the most sacred object of worship in the Buddhist world. Security used to be lax. Nobody here imagined a place of such religious importance would ever be the target of a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber. The destruction to the front of the temple was huge. The roof was blown right off. Scores of people were killed or injured. Many of those working here had a narrow escape.
A Villager: I was about to come here. I was ten minutes late. Otherwise I wouldn’t have spoken to you today. I would have been dead.
Twice a day the inner vestibule of the shrine is unlocked. The tooth relic itself is too sacred to be shown to the public, but it’s said to have been unharmed. For the faithful, there’s some comfort in the thought that an act of sacrilege inadvertently uncovered something with immense value.
A layer of plaster was blown off the wall of the inside of the shrine by the force of the explosion. Under the colorful 1940s paintings, the restoration team found two earlier layers of murals. This elephant dates back to the early 18th century and is probably part of a ceremonial pageant. Scholars say the new discovery is so significant it changes the history of Sri Lankan art, filling in a six-hundred-year gap.

Art Auction Anticipates Anxious Buyers
The US Art Auctionhouse Sotheby’s is gearing up for one of its biggest sales of the year, an auction of impressionist and modern art to be held this week. It’s expected to fetch a total of around $180 million. Sotheby’s may hold an auction twice a year but this time there’s a real buzz about proceedings. There are 55 major works up for grabs but all the attention is on this one- Claude Monet’s Jeune File Dan Le Jardin painted in 1880. It’s expected to fetch some $30 million. The organizers said it’s one of the last great paintings of Monet that’s every likely to come onto the market. Not just painting, but sculpture is also on offer.
David Norman, Sotheby’s Director of Impressionist Art: My feelings now are very positive based on the number of collectors who have come to see the art works who have been calling in advance of this exhibition which opens today. I don’t think people are shaken by the changes in the stock market. The presidential elections are not affecting people’s desire to buy the art works. I think there’s still great wealth I believe Americans will continue to be the dominant majority bidder and buyers at the sale so I’m feeling very optimistic but always cautiously so for the sale.
But the Americans may have a run for their money. All the works going under the hammer have already been exhibited in Paris, Zurich, Los Angeles and Tokyo. Bidders from all over the world are expected to compete for a piece of art history.

Cave Engravings Discovered Near Paris
Archeologists in France say they've discovered a key to the spectacular collection of carvings dating back to prehistoric times. They believe the collection rivals that of the world-famous cave paintings of Lascaux, also found in the same region as Dordogne. The engravings are remarkably complete, and show the animals that would have roamed at the time. The carvings were made, well over 22,000 years ago. They depict bison, horses, and rhinoceros. The carvings stretch across nearly a kilometer of cave walls. Archeologists say it's an exceptional discovery and they believe the quality of the engravings proves the importance of the Cussac caves. One image that baffles them is the depiction of a woman, which may be a sexual icon. The bones of five humans were also found and possibly date from 22,000 years ago. However, because of the fragility of the engravings, the cave won't be open to the public for the foreseeable future, but there are plans for it to be shown on the Internet.

Love Parade in Berlin
Around 300,000 techno-music enthusiasts took to the streets of Berlin as part of the annual Love Parade. Environmentalists had tried to stop the Love Parade, as they feared Berlin Central Park would be damaged.
It's known as the world's biggest and brashest dance music party. The organizers are calling this year a modest love parade. But Berlin's most flamboyant annual get-together still draws the crowds. Half a million ravers packed into Berlin City Square with one sole aim - to have the time of their lives.
Confusion over whether the open-air party was going ahead kept the numbers well below last year's million plus. But hundreds of DJs including some of Europe's top acts kept the crowds entertained. In this annual celebration of love and joy, pulsating techno-music throbbed along two routes bisecting Berlin's Tear Garden Park as revelers converged from the city's Victory Column where for the exhibitionists. It was clearly their night.
But the love parade hasn't made everybody happy. A small group of environmentalists who thought the party would ruin the park got the procession postponed for a week. Personal Finance Education in the U.K.
Britain is launching a new scheme to improve the teaching of finance in schools. Personal finance is already part of the national curriculum in England and Wales while Scotland and Ireland are developing their own strategies. But according to the personal finance education group, the organization behind today’s move, teachers don’t always get the help they need.
Schools like Broadwater in Godalming in Surrey already use examples of dealing with money in lessons like maths. But unlike many other schools, it’s taking things a stage further. Its teacher devised a course where people set up their own business, part of that involved money management.
Nicky Wells (Broadwater School Teacher): They learned how to write checks, learned how to pay and fill in payment slips. They actually went and opened up their own bank accounts. They had to understand budgeting. We looked at a wish list. They had to think about what sort of career they’d like, what kind of lifestyle they would like and actually budgeting from that wage.
According to research carried out by BMRB, 81% of adults wanted their own children to learn personal finance at school, while 61% wished they’d been taught money matters in their own school days.
By 2005, it’s hoped that 128,000 school children will have had access to personal finance lessons, something that would go down well with parents. Learning about money is already part of the timetable for some of the pupils at this school. But where personal finance is taught, the problem for teachers can be getting hold of the right material. The moment students leave school, they have to face the prospect of dealing with complicated financial forms, as well as things like credit and budgeting.
Wendy Van Den Hende (Personal Finance Education Group): What we are trying to do is to make it easier for teachers. We want them to be able to put personal finance education examples into all different parts of their subject-areas, it could be citizenship, it could be the personal social health education. Some teachers might find it useful in their IT lessons, whereas other teachers might find it useful to explore the moral dimensions of the religious education.
If the project is a success, it’s hoped that all children will eventually be taught the basics of personal finance as well as the three Rs.

NY Thanksgiving Day Parade
In the United States it’s Thanksgiving Day, a major celebration in the American year. But after the events of September the 11th, many people simply haven't been in the usual mood. Others though are determined to try and lift the nation’s spirits. And in New York, there has been a huge 1)turnout for the city’s Thanksgiving Parade.
It is a day of so many emotions. For more than 70 years, the Thanksgiving Parade has held a special place in the heart of Americans. For Gagzaied, this year is more precious than ever. He escaped from the World Trade Center before it collapsed. His family knows they are lucky. Things could have been very different.
Daughter: This year is special because my dad came back safely from what happened on September 11th, and I’m glad he is OK.
Across the city in just a few streets from where the Twin Towers were, a stark reminder that thousands of people have little to celebrate. Ghad is now a volunteer here for the Red Cross. He’s needed the charity too, with no job since September the 11th and a family of seven to look after.
Ghad: I come in here to help everybody.
Plenty of people here feel the same. They’re come to the Parade to show the city is doing its best to recover. The parade gave them the chance to honor the police and fire crews of the city, now the heroes of everyone. In a city shattered by its most recent past, for some at least the traditional Thanksgiving celebrations were a source of comfort.
The Thanksgiving Day Parade has been part of the American history since the early 1920’s. And organizers say there was never any question that this year’s would be cancelled. Instead, they hoped that for some New Yorkers, at least, it might be a symbol of hope for the future.

Artificial Heart Implanted
Surgeons in the American state of Kentucky have implanted the world's first self-contained mechanical heart. The unnamed patient is said to be resting comfortably. The implant is the first of five human trials licensed in America. The hospital that made history is releasing few details: The artificial heart was implanted on Monday. The patient, an American, is said to be comfortable and responsive.
Hospital Official: The quiet period is necessary; it's in the best interest of the patient and of the physician. It's in the best interest of patient care.
This heart replacement device is the product of decades of research. It is self-contained within the body, powered by an internal battery, which is itself recharged by a clip-on external battery pack.
Doctor: If it fulfills its promise, people will be able to engage in full exercise and activities and will not be tethered down by the external machine that does the pumping.
Thousands of patients in America are waiting for heart transplants. One day the new breed of mechanical heart might offer a viable alternative but for now it's experimental. The first recipient was close to death and didn't expect to live more than a few months, nonetheless, medical trials will continue.

The First Artificial Heart Recipient Dies
The first person to receive the world’s most advanced artificial heart has died. Fifty-nine year old Robert Tools had the historic operation in a Louisville Hospital in July, but suffered multi-organ failure after severe internal bleeding. Doctors report that his health was not due to a malfunction of the experimental artificial heart.
With characteristic good humor, Robert Tools shows off the benefits of his new heart after pioneering surgery in July. Without the operation, he was expected to die within a month, with the new heart, he fought on for five months. Made of plastic and titanium, the device contains a small internal motor. It pumps blood, taking power from a battery pack attached to the patient’s body. No wires or tubes pierce the skin. Mr. Tools had a long-standing heart condition, but a full transplant was not an option. He’s been praised for his courage in taking a risk.
Tools: If you’re a fighter, you do what you do best and I fought, and I fought, and I fought.
The company behind the technology points out that Mr. Tools died, not because his new heart failed, but because of severe abdominal bleeding related to his existing health problems. In the long term, the company is promising a medical revolution, by offering hope to hundreds of thousands of heart patients without access to a transplant.

Napster Fights for Survival
Thousands of miles away from Wall Street today, a ruling that truly rocks the music industry and fans of Napster, the popular on-line music swapping service was dealt a blow from a Federal Court in California, which concluded Napster is infringing on copyrights. But the service is still up and running. Bruce Francis joins us now with the details of today’s complex decision.
Bruce Francis: Up and running for now. Bed time for Napster? Not yet. The service stays up and running while a lower court figures out issues like identifying copyrighted files but today the recording industry clearly gained the upper hand in its love-hate, well mostly hate relationship with Napster.
No rest for Napster user Peter Sayer this past weekend. A rush to find music before a potential shutdown yielded a bonanza.
Peter Sayer: Me and about a million other users run through it as well and that creates a large volume of shared files so there’s more out there to download and we go nuts downloading.
Napster, which allows users to exchange recorded music over the Internet, plays on for Sayer and some 50 million other registered users but perhaps not for long. A Federal Appeals Court in San Francisco ruled that an earlier order shutting down Napster has to be modified. Once it is though, the service could be halted. In a slam dunk for the recording industry, the Ninth District Court Of Appeals found that Napster knew or had reason to know of its users?infringement of plaintiff’s copyrights. Napster’s CEO Hank Barry vowed to appeal.
Hank Barry: We believe this is contrary to what the court ruled today. The Napster users are not copyright infringers and we will pursue every legal avenue to keep Napster operating.
The recording industry including Warner Music, which like CNN is owned by a AOL-Time Warner, couldn’t be happier.
RIAA CEO, Hilary Rosen: That a business model built on infringement is not only morally wrong but legally wrong. And we’re very gratified that the Ninth Circuit today agreed with us one hundred percent.
Last fall German entertainment giant Burtlesman broke ranks with the recording industry and invested in Napster and struck a deal to develop a subscription version. And while he’s still too young to legally drown his sorrows over today’s ruling in a beer, Napster’s founder Sean Fanning says that effort continues.
Sean Fanning: I’m focused on building this better service and I still hope to have it in place this year.
But fans of a free Napster might not stick around.
User: My interest to get into this one when I can easily get into another one. If it was the same idea and you wouldn’t have to subscribe to it.
And Napster could appeal the injunction and the rest of the decision to the Supreme Court

Now, the educational value of the Internet is undeniable, and people all over the world are taking advantage of the huge range of courses offered on the web. The International Business School Insead is, today, joining the ranks of online educators. The school’s research shows that 68% of potential students are prepared to take on-line courses outside business hours and 58% say a well-known business school brand would influence their choice of course. Insead research also shows that most business students are influenced by travel and accommodation costs. But joining me now is Insead’s Dean of Technology, Sonmitra Dutta. Good morning to you. First of all, does your course, your on-line course, does that offer MBAs?
Answer: Not yet, not yet. We certainly believe in the value of face-to-face interaction of the MBA program. The on-line component, today, aims to compliment the MBA experience.
Q: As far as the on-line component is concerned, to what extent do you think students need to have the integration with other people? That perhaps working remotely, as this would be, is a bit of a turn-off for them?
A: Well, let’s not forget, I think on-line is not a substitution, you can have interaction off and on-line. You think about the market demands, the customers which are individuals are demanding more flexible, customized learning solutions and corporations are demanding much more rapid deployment of learning solutions. Technology helps them in doing that and I think you can still have interaction face-to-face combined with the on-line components.
Q: And how much of a cost-saving element is there in this for people because of course they don’t have to worry about travel and they don’t have to worry about accommodation? To what extent do they think about that when they may be planning this?

In Spain, Real Madrid’s gallop away from the chasing pack at the top of the premier leaguer has been reigned in following their defeat at Athletic Bilbao at the weekend. US Golfer Defends Buick Title
The American golfer Phil Nichelson has successfully defended his title at the Buick Invitational tournament in California. The event led to a three-way play-off but it wasn’t an impressive finish. Davis Love was eliminated on the second extra hole leaving Nichelson and Frank Lickliter in the playoff. Nichelson looked to have thrown it away when he hooked his tee shot into the trees but his rival then did exactly the same. Nichelson made another mistake at the same hole and Lickliter had a chance for his first title but he sent his bogey putt past the hole and missed the return as well to hand Nichelson the title for the third time.

Euro Club Transfer Changes Discussed
The future of the football transfer system in Europe is being discussed in Brussels. Officials from the European Commission are meeting the presidents of football’s European and world governing bodies. Both parties now accept that the present system does breach a new law.
Take Portuguese striker Louis Figo, for example. Real Madrid broke the transfer market record when they paid Barcelona ￡38 million to buy their star striker. According to the European Commission, no such transfers are illegal because they contravene labor laws. UEFA and FIFA officials meeting in Brussels today are trying desperately to thrash out a new system of contracts to suit both clubs and players.
Neither side seems to be able to agree on a solution. Players want a system which allows them to move more freely with shorter notice periods and in which wagers are a key feature. But clubs who vied to pay a fortune for their footballing assets or who brought them on as youngsters disagree. They want their players to honor their contracts. They’re also suggesting a compromise: no transfer fees only after the players reach the age of 24. Both sides acknowledge changes are needed to bring the game’s employment rules into the 21st century. But if today’s meeting is the equivalent of the first half, this battle is likely to go to extra time, then penalties, before it’s resolved.

NBA Highlights
The NBA back to business after the All-Star break and Philadelphia back to their winning ways. Allen Iverson scored 49 points as the Sixers beat the Milwaukee Bucks but his personal tally was not the highest of the night. And that’s because Stephen Marbury scored 50 as the New Jersey Nets took on Shaq O’Neal and the Lakers.
After missing a handful of matters, the Lakers in last weekend’s All-Star game were the fit-in group. Shaquille O’Neal marked his return to action in trademark style at the New Jersey Nets. Stephen Marbury did make the All-Star game. He hit the winning shot for the East and his hot hand continued here as he proceeded to pour in points. The feud between O’Neal and teammate Kobe Bryant may mean the pair won’t exchange Valentine’s Day cards but at least Bryant’s passing the ball now. If they can put their differences aside they’re a formidable duo. In this match they put on a combined 70 points but Marbury is fantastic and he ended the night with a career high 50 but not before Shaq had thoroughly tested the strength of the baskets in New Jersey with an array of massive dunks. When Kobe Bryant hit this nice reverse lay up with a minute to go, it looked like curtains for the Nets but Marbury tied it all up at 104 a piece with a three that sparked wild celebrations. He sent the match into overtime, the Nets first OT game of the season. And with four seconds on the clock in the extra period, Bryant’s determined drive paid off. The shot fell and he was rewarded with an extra foul shot, which he duly converted. Marbury’s luck would run out when his last ditch effort bounced off the rim. So despite his superb performance, the Nets lost 130 to 110 the final score.

The triple Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones has won the Jesse Owens International Trophy as the world’s outstanding athlete of last year. Fastest Woman Sailor Gets Hero’s Welcome
The round-the-world yachtswoman, Ellen MacArthur has spent her first night on land after her record breaking performance in the Globe Vendee Challenge. She’s received a hero’s welcome when she crossed the races finish line in second place last night.
Her boat broken but her spirit unbowed, 24-year old Ellen MacArthur sailed into the record books. Tens of thousands of people watched her cross the finish line to become the fastest woman to sail around the world on her own. The last few days have been the most grueling. When her rigging was damaged, her chances of winning ended. But even though she had to reduce her speed, she still increased her lead on her closest rival to arrive a comfortable second. Looking confident and clearly excited by the extraordinary welcome from the crowds, her composure broke just once when she was given three cheers as she stepped off the boat that had been her whole world for 94 days.

COPA OPENS
The South America Football Tournament, the COPA America, has kicked off in Colombia after weeks of uncertainty over whether the tournament would go ahead because of security concerns. The tournament was briefly suspended because of the threat of violence from rebel guerrillas, which resulted in the withdrawal of the favorite, Argentina. Ecuador and Chile have finished playing the first match, with Chile winning 4-1 in an enthralling game. I spoke to our correspondent in the Colombian capital, Bogata, Jeremy McDermott, and asked him if there were any security problems at that game.
Jeremy McDermott : No, no, it all went ahead without a hitch. Security has been heavy and it will be heavy throughout the tournament as the Colombian President, Andres Pastrana, has guaranteed that he can ensure that all the matches go without any threats to the players or to the spectators.
How? he going to do that?
McDermott: Well, it’s a very good question. He’s put an enormous amount of police in the cities where the matches are being held and army cordons around the cities. The guerrillas, Marxist guerrillas, have said they’re not going to interfere and the right-wing paramilitaries have said that they express no interest in disrupting the games, but there have been car bombs in the cities in recent weeks and the security forces are very nervous.
And those measures haven’t reassured, Argentina, for example?
McDermott: No, Argentina pulled out yesterday which has caused a great furor here in Colombia. Indeed, they were due to play in the city of Medillin. The mayor of Medellin is thinking of suing the Argentineans for disrupting the tournament.
And can they maintain that level of security for two and a half weeks throughout the country?
McDermott: Well, they believe so, and if the major warring factions, that’s the paramilitaries and the guerrillas, have said they’re not going to disrupt the games then the security forces only have to defend themselves against terrorist incidents. So, we’re all hoping, and Colombia’s very much hoping that things go ahead as planned.

Japanese Golfer Wins US Tournament
Golf and Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama has recorded his first ever victory on the US PGA tour after coming through a playoff to win the Greater Milwaukee Open in Wisconsin. Having blown his chance of an outright victory on the 18th green, Maruyama sank this short putt on the first play-off hole to beat Charles Howell III of America. Maruyama who had won nine tournaments in his native land, landed the biggest prize of his career when he picked up the winner’s check for $558,000.

New Free Diving Record
Free diving, made famous by the film The Big Blue, has a new world record holder. A young Turkish diver has broken her own record and dived to a depth of 105 meters on one single breath. Yasemin Dalkilic managed to dive five meters deeper than her previous best depth. The 22-year old overcame a painful burst eardrum to achieve the world record.

Winter Olympic Torch Relay Started
Now, the flame that will burn at the Salt Lake City Winter Games has begun its journey to the United States after a ceremony at the stadium where the Olympics were reborn more than a century ago. Well, the flame was lit last month in ancient Olympia, where the games originated nearly 3000 years ago. It was brought to Athens and has burned for two weeks in a bronze cauldron. On Monday, the torch that will travel to the USA was lit at the Panathenian Stadium and passed to Mitt Romney, president of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. The US torch relay starts on Tuesday in Atlanta and arrives in Salt Lake City on February the 8th.

World Solar Challenge
Moving away from Afghanistan now and cars running on nothing but the rays of the sun are racing across the Australian outback. The World Solar Challenge attracts innovators from around the world and contrary to what many people would expect, the high-tech vehicles are reaching spectacular speeds. David Juzan reports.
Running on pure sunshine. Could this be the future of the motor car? It’s an ecologist’s dream but an oil man’s nightmare.
Thirty-eight solar powered cars competing in this year’s World Solar Challenge, with the starting line in Darwin. They’re to travel the length of Australia some 3,000 kilometers across the outback. The race expected to take about five days. And the drivers are as keyed up as contestants in any other race.
Contestant: Uh, we’re doing great. We had a speed tomorrow with eleventh position. We took over nine cars so we’re now in second position.
The fastest cars in this year’s pre-race trials hit speeds well over 100 kilometers an hour. When the race began in 1987, the average racing speed was only 67 kilometers an hour. The idea of the race is to promote research and development of solar powered transport. Australia with its abundant sunshine makes an ideal testing ground.
A solar-powered cycle race is also due to begin in Alice Springs this week.

World Cup Draw
Millions of viewers around the world watched as the draw for next year’s football World Cup is made in Korea. Thirty-two countries will be vying for international football’s top honor. The tournament co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The teams are being drawn into eight groups of four to compete in this, the first World Cup to be held in Asia.
Last year’s World Player of the Year, French midfielder Zinedine Zidane says he’s expecting a physical game as defending champions France take on World Cup newcomers Senegal in the tournament’s opening game in Seoul. The French team favored to top group A, which also includes Uruguay and Denmark.
Michael Platini (Former French Captain): So the final could be France-Argentina, after you know that if you play Argentina or France, England, or Brazil, Italy, Spain, you’re not sure to win.
Strong contender Spain along with Slovenia, Paraguay and South Africa make up group B. Four-time champions Brazil will play in South Korea in Group C, which shouldn’t cause them too many problems. They’ll take on Turkey in the first group match on June 3. World Cup first timers China and top North and Central America qualifier Costa Rica complete the group. Co-host Korea has been drawn against Poland, the United States and Portugal in group D. After securing their place in the tournament in the last minute, following the decidedly shaky qualifying campaign, three-time winners Germany face stiff opposition. They’ve been drawn in Group E, which includes Republic of Ireland as well as Cameroon and Saudi Arabia.

And there’s always a lot of tension and especially for the coaches now being here. But you know, you just take it the way it comes out and hopefully we have a not too difficult group.
England take on arch rival Argentina, top South American qualifier, in what looks like the toughest group. 1996 Olympic gold medallists Nigeria and Sweden, home team of England manager Sven Goran Eriksson complete the Group F lineup. Hotly tipped Italy take on Ecuador, Croatia and Mexico in Group G, while Group H pits co-hosts Japan against Belgium, Russia and Tunisia.

News Corp-DirecTV Plan Merger
There are newspaper reports in Europe on Wednesday that General Motors has reached an agreement with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp to merge their satellite and television businesses. Now GM's Hughes Electronics, it's the owner of DirecTV and News Corp's Sky Global Networks, will be combined in a business worth some $70 billion. Microsoft is also thought to be investing in some four to five billion dollars in the project. News Corp would, after a complicated series of deals, increase its ownership to a controlling stake. It's a merger that's long been forecast and it would fulfill Mr. Murdoch's ambition of extending his satellite TV business into the US.

Daimler-Chrysler Profit Plunge
Now profits at the German and the US Daimler-Chrysler dropped sharply last year. The group shocked the market by announcing a 49 percent fall in operating profits to $4.8 billion. Last week it announced the restructuring of its Chrysler operations following a downturn in its US business.
Daimler-Chrysler’sproblems lie with its US car making operations, where losses are mounting. Investors are waiting for details of a restructuring program expected at the end of this month. But the group has already said that it will slash 20 percent of jobs at Chrysler and scale back the cost of materials by 15 percent over two years. Today’sresults show yearly operating profits have halved at the group as a whole. But there were no separate details of the plight of the Chrysler division. However, back in December a letter to shareholders suggested fourth quarter losses there would double from the previous three months to $1.2 billion.
There’s speculation that shareholders are growing more and more frustrated with Daimler-Chrysler management. Two days ago, the Amir of Kuwait, whose country is the second biggest shareholder, received a visit from the group’schief executive Jurgen Schrempp. Analysts say the Kuwaitis have seen their stake half in value since 1998. Like other investors, they will want to know detailed plans for how the spiraling losses at Chrysler can be stemmed.

Japan Recession Looms
Now to Japan and the chances of that economy heading into recession are growing. GDP for the three months to September fell naught point six percent rather than the naught point two percent increase the government was hoping for. Those figures come as the Bank of Japan prepares to decide on interest rates on Friday. Analysts say the best hope for economic revival seems to be the yen staying weak and helping exporters.

Shell Makes $13 Billion Profit
It’s been a bumper year for Royal Dutch Shell. Its latest results show earnings up a massive 85 percent, hitting a record $13 billion. Its all thanks of course to the high price of oil. It may have been a turbulent year on the forecourt, but for oil companies the year 2000 has delivered record returns. Shell’s profits were up 85 percent on last year. The company has benefited from a better trading environment across many of its operations. Roughly 70 percent of Shell’s profits come from its exploration business. Most of the rest from its refining operations. All have fared well in the past year. A crucial factor has been the ongoing higher price of oil and gas. Last month the world’s largest oil company, Exxon-Mobil also announced record profits of over ￡12 billion. BP is expected to continue the trend. But for the thousands of people who joined fuel protests across the UK, Europe and North America last year, these figures will fuel their concerns that consumers are being exploited. Motorists, farmers and homeowners facing higher heating bills took to the streets as soaring oil prices impacted on the cost of petrol and domestic fuel. Oil companies claim their margins on the forecourt are wafer thin and that the bulk of their profits are made elsewhere. The outlook for the industry in the months ahead looks good too. While the companies expect oil prices to be volatile this year, last month’s five percent cut in oil production by OPEC has sent prices back near the $30 a barrel mark.
